Aston Martin DBS  Restoration

The DBS 6 was intended as the successor to the DB6. Although, in my opinion the design had gone too far in the other direction and I believe this was because it was chasing the American market, that being the big American muscle cars.  Sadly, the beautiful lines of the DB4,5 & 6 were gone.

However, it is still an Aston Martin. This car was constructed in aluminium and was made by hand as with all other Astons. This Aston was built in 1969.

A full restoration was needed, as you can see our task was great. We had to basically build the whole car up from scratch. It was a colossal task, but the outcome was nothing short of spectacular from what it was.

The initial step was stripping the car and see what we are dealing with.

After stripping the car of paint, we were able to take off the front end and see what we are dealing with and able to take the engine out. There was a considerable amount of rust as you can see from the photos. it was necessary to shot bast the steel sections and see what we were left with and build from there. The next stage is to epoxy the areas that were still good and weld any other sections that need it. The next area to tackle was the aluminium body work.

At our Yorkshire classic car restoration workshop, we can undertake different types of welding. In this case it was to weld some new areas of aluminium.

The car was put back together as Aston martin had intended which was not always straight forward however, we managed to match the panels up and even get the correct gap size in all the apertures, as in many cases Aston Martins will differ in length from the driver’s side to the passenger side. Apparently, this was down to the car being hand made. The art is to put the car back together as Aston Matin had intended. Our next major hurdle was to rebuild the engine and all other components. The whole engine was restored including new pistons, rings, manifolds, valves, seals, and gaskets. The engine was skimmed and all tested before it went back into the car. An unleaded conversion completed the car engine rebuild.

Fortunately, Aston Martin heritage parts department have just about all the parts you may need to rebuild a classic Aston Martin, the rest we had to make by hand such as some panels and engine components.

Our client who was based in London requested the car to be re sprayed in green to match the Aston Martin used by James Bond (George Lazenby) in the film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’. We happily obliged. We respray a vast amount of classic and modern-day performance cars, so we were more than confident to respray this Aston Martin at our Yorkshire classic car restoration workshop.

The transmission was taken to pieces and fully restored along with the axel and all other associated parts. New servos and brakes were fitted along with

a new exhaust, radiator, shock absorbers, fuel tank, fuel lines. There really is not much we did not do. One of the hardest things to find was the steel pieces that are in the corners of the windows front and rear. As we were replacing the windows they had to come out and there was only one of the steel corners in each of the windows. Nobody had any available, so we found a local company in Bradford that manufactured them for us. Unfortunately, we had to order them in bulk however this was worth it as it’s the detail that makes a fabulous classic car restoration.

Our client decided that he would like to add some modern comforts such as a new sound system, but he decided to keep the original 8 track that was in the glove box. We managed to find some 1970s 8 tracks for him. Central locking was added which we feel was a non-invasive modern comfort.

The unusual request was to make a gear nob out of aluminium. Fortunately, our friends in Bradford were able to come to our aid again. It was made from one block of aluminium, and it was manufactured by a machine that scanned the old gear knob and replicated it by laser cutting the block of aluminium. It was a work of art and it screwed on to the stick perfectly. The cost was not for the faint hearted; however, we aim to achieve the goals of our clients.

New electrical looms were added along with the dials being refurbished. New door seals and sound deadening along with insulation was added.

The last major restoration to this classic car was the interior. Before we start an interior restoration, we try to salvage as much as we can especially if it is to do with anything that is made of leather. Some of the leather was salvageable but unfortunately some of the panels of leather were too far gone so the client made the decision to re upholster and replace the leather with new. It was replaced in the correct Aston Martin grain and looked amazing once we had finished stitching it.

The ancillaries were the final icing on the cake. With new re chromed metal work and new chrome wire wheels. This is a fantastic Yorkshire classic car restoration.
