**Hindustan Ambassador**
Over the years, we have received many unusual requests to restore vehicles. These requests have ranged from tractors to a pizza van, a horsebox, and even a tuk-tuk. One of my favourite unusual cars we have restored is the Hindustan Ambassador. Produced from 1957 to 2014, it is based on the Morris Oxford Series 3 model, although it is slightly larger than that.
The Ambassador was known as the “King of Indian Roads.” It was briefly imported to the UK in 1992, where it was retrofitted with seatbelts and heaters. However, only a small number of these cars were ever sold, and the import unfortunately went into liquidation. I can understand why these cars were made in such enormous volumes; they are quite basic yet very functional, much like a Land Rover Defender, as they have easily replaceable parts.
In 1979, the Ambassador’s front underwent a significant facelift, departing from the flatter design of the 1950s, which was retained until its end in 2014. The front grille was much smaller in height and featured a larger chequered grille with square park lamps. Separate amber indicator lamps were incorporated into a semi-front lip spoiler below the bumper, which was mounted higher up. This model was designated as the Mark IV. In addition to the existing petrol version, a diesel variant was launched in 1980, powered by a 1489 cc, 37 bhp diesel engine. It was the first diesel car in India and was well received, although initially only available as a taxi or for government use due to restrictions on private ownership of diesel automobiles.
The car we have restored is a Mark IV, and there is something extraordinary about it that makes you smile. Perhaps it is the combination of old-school and new-school mechanics, but whatever the reason, this car is fantastic.
The restoration work mainly focused on bodywork and some engine repairs. As the photos show, panels needed to be welded and realigned. The colour was kept the same—a beautiful blue—because the car’s originality is essential.
This was an immensely popular car in India.
