There are challenging restorations and there are ones that have a lot of issues when you take the paint off. This is exactly what happened in this case. This particular Bentley was made just after World War 2 and it was very fitting that its first owner was a Wing Commander. I bet you are imagining a dashing young RAF pilot jumping into his Bentley and shooting off to the country for a picnic.
Now time has not been kind to this Bentley. It had been painted over the years, we think it was painted with a paint brush! The metal that was used to create the car was steel but it was the worst cheap steel that was going as it was just after the war. It was absolute rubbish. Its life expectancy was not long and the only thing keeping these panels in place was paint and newspaper (I kid you not).
We started to hand strip the car but as we were taking the paint off the panels were disintegrating before our eyes. We informed the client of the situation and asked him to come in. It was decided to salvage what we could and put some new panels on. Even as we were trying to salvage some panels and welding other panels to them they were disintegrating. I think this is a perfect lesson in that sometimes it is cheaper to put a new panel on rather than trying to make good with what you have.
However we managed to win the battle and I’m sure the Wing Commander would appreciate her new look. A splendid Yorkshire Classic Bentley car restoration.
