The first car produced by the new company was the Bianchina, named in honor of Edoardo Bianchi’s first car from 1899. The Bianchina was built on the mechanical components of the Fiat 500, featuring a rear-mounted two-cylinder, air-cooled engine. However, it boasted a completely new and stylish body designed by Luigi Rapi, who led Fiat’s special body unit and helped establish production in Desio. With many premium design elements and equipment features, the Bianchina was an upscale city car, positioned above the Fiat 500 in the market. It was marketed as a “second vehicle for the household” and a luxurious “recreational vehicle,” primarily targeting affluent middle-class women, reflecting the growing affluence in Italian society. The first Bianchina rolled off the production line in Desio on September 11, 1957. It featured a distinctive two-door landaulet body style, known as the “Trasformabile.” This remained the only body style until 1960, when a two-door “Cabriolet” full convertible was introduced, followed by a three-door estate model called the “Panoramica” and a two-door sedan known as the “Berlina.”

Our work on servicing and general maintenance

This car was an absolute pleasure to work on. It’s not just because we love it and it looks incredible; it’s also due to its simplicity. Often, we strive for new forms of engineering, when perhaps the best engineering we have ever achieved as a nation is the simplest. We appreciated this car because it is different from the typical Fiat 500 you would encounter in Italy.
It’s also a delightful surprise to see a right-hand drive version here at Lab. The brief for this project was straightforward: service the car, which involved adjusting the ignition timing and replacing the dynamo. We also performed a bit of general maintenance on the door, and that was essentially it. If you’re looking to restore or service your classic car, look no further than Classic Lab.
