Retro Car Restoration
**Mercedes SL R107**
The R107 represented a significant shift for the SL model, moving it upmarket. Unlike its predecessor, this model shed most of its sporting pretensions to become a fully-fledged GT car, a strategy that served Mercedes well for nearly two decades.
Launched in 1971 as the 350SL, the lineup eventually expanded to include the six-cylinder 280SL and V8 options, including the 500SL in the UK and the 560SL in America. Among these, the late 300SL, with its six-cylinder engine, is considered the most practical option, while many enthusiasts prefer the purity of the early 350SL V8s. Currently, the 500SL is the most valuable model, as the market tends to favour those with larger engines and better specifications, making them easier to resell.
There was also an SL derivative, the SLC, which was extended by 12 inches. This coupe effectively replaced the S-Class coupe for a generation.
Our model is a 350 SL. This is the greatest SL Mercedes ever built, and I absolutely love it.
The brief was to get it going correctly and have a thorough Yorkshire Car restoration done to it. Indeed, we were only too happy to oblige.
The car was first striped, then carefully bagged and tagged to avoid losing parts. A record was kept so we knew exactly where everything went back.
The painter then prepared and painted the car, which was finally flated and polished. I do like the colour combination. Perhaps a red hood would have made the car stand out, but this is only personal preference.
The red interior looks fabulous against the silver colour. This is such a fantastically built car.
