Jaguar C Type Restoration

Project Information
Project Description:
Jaguar C-Type Restoration & Race Car Preparation Yorkshire – Classic Car Lab
Preserving One of Jaguar’s Greatest Racing Legends
The Jaguar C-Type is one of the most important and beautiful racing cars Jaguar ever created. Officially known as the Jaguar XK120C, the C-Type was developed directly from the legendary XK120 and became one of the defining British racing cars of the 1950s.
Lightweight, aerodynamic and engineered for endurance racing, the C-Type achieved international success at Le Mans and helped establish Jaguar as one of the dominant names in motorsport during that era.
This particular Jaguar C-Type has been known to Classic Car Lab Yorkshire for many years and remains one of the most exciting and rewarding cars we have had the pleasure of working on.
Cars like this are not simply classic cars.
They are genuine pieces of motorsport history.
At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we are fortunate to work on many significant classic and modern classic vehicles, but the Jaguar C-Type always feels especially special whenever it returns to our workshop.
A Lightweight Racing Thoroughbred
The Jaguar C-Type was revolutionary for its time.
Built around a lightweight tubular chassis with an aerodynamic aluminium body, the car combined racing performance with beautiful flowing lines that still look breathtaking today.
Everything about the car was designed around speed, balance and endurance competition.
Unlike many grand touring classics, the C-Type is a true racing machine and driving one properly requires respect, concentration and careful setup.
At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we understand that preserving cars like this is about much more than appearance alone. It is about ensuring the vehicle remains mechanically correct, usable and enjoyable while retaining the character and feel that made it such an iconic competition car in the first place.
Mechanical Recommissioning & Performance Setup
Although this particular Jaguar C-Type did not require paintwork restoration during its time with us, extensive mechanical restoration, recommissioning and tuning work was carried out to improve reliability, drivability and overall usability.
One of the primary goals of the project was to make the car more manageable and confidence inspiring to drive in modern conditions while preserving its raw racing personality.
Historic race cars can often feel challenging in everyday traffic due to aggressive setup characteristics, sensitive throttle response and period braking systems.
At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we carefully worked through the mechanical systems to refine the driving experience without removing the authenticity of the vehicle.
Mechanical and setup work included:
- Engine recommissioning
- Rolling road tuning
- Performance setup and calibration
- Mechanical servicing
- Reliability improvements
- Drivability refinement
- Safety inspections and ongoing maintenance
The car was extensively tested and tuned on the rolling road to optimise engine performance, throttle response and drivability characteristics.
Getting historic race cars properly set up requires patience and specialist knowledge, particularly when balancing performance with usability.
The result was a Jaguar C-Type that remained thrilling and authentic to drive while becoming significantly more enjoyable and manageable for modern road use.
Ongoing Care & Long-Term Relationship
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is the long-term relationship we continue to have with both the car and its owner.
Classic Car Lab Yorkshire has looked after this Jaguar C-Type for many years, carrying out servicing, tuning, inspections and ongoing maintenance to ensure the vehicle continues to perform exactly as it should.
Long-term stewardship is incredibly important with cars of this significance.
Historic competition vehicles require specialist understanding and careful preventative maintenance to preserve both their mechanical integrity and their historical value.
Seeing this beautiful Jaguar continue to return to our workshop year after year remains a genuine privilege for the entire team.
More Than a Classic Car
The Jaguar C-Type represents a very important chapter in British motorsport history.
Cars like this helped shape Jaguar’s global reputation for performance and engineering excellence, and preserving them properly is something we take enormous pride in at Classic Car Lab Yorkshire.
The combination of lightweight construction, aluminium coachwork, racing pedigree and unmistakable Jaguar styling makes the C-Type one of the most desirable historic race cars ever produced.
Even today, decades after it first raced, the car still possesses incredible presence and excitement whenever it enters the workshop.
It is simply a beautiful machine.
