Project Information
Project Description:
Aston Martin DBS V8 Restoration Yorkshire – Full Nut-and-Bolt Restoration by Classic Car Lab
A Hand-Built British Grand Tourer Reborn at Our Yorkshire Restoration Workshop
The Aston Martin DBS V8 is one of the most charismatic and powerful Aston Martins ever produced. Combining muscular grand touring presence with handcrafted British engineering, the DBS V8 perfectly captured the spirit of 1970s high-performance motoring.
This particular Aston Martin DBS V8 arrived at Classic Car Lab Yorkshire requiring what would ultimately become an extensive nut-and-bolt restoration involving major structural work, aluminium welding, full paint and body restoration, interior retrimming, engine rebuilding and countless hours of specialist craftsmanship.
From the moment the project began, we knew this restoration was going to be something special.
There is a unique feeling during a full classic car restoration when, piece by piece, the vehicle slowly begins to return to life. As every restored component was refitted and every section completed, the enormity of the work became increasingly clear — but so did the excitement and satisfaction of saving such an important British classic.
Projects like this are exactly why Classic Car Lab Yorkshire exists.
Bare-Metal Restoration & Handcrafted Bodywork
The restoration began with a complete strip down and assessment of the vehicle.
As with many hand-built Aston Martins of this era, significant structural and cosmetic work was required throughout the shell. The car was carefully stripped back to bare metal so the true condition of the body could be properly assessed before restoration work began.
Specialist Aluminium Welding & Fabrication
One of the most technically demanding aspects of this Aston Martin DBS V8 restoration involved the aluminium bodywork.
Welding and repairing aluminium correctly requires a completely different skill set from conventional steel restoration work. Heat control, panel alignment and structural integrity are all critical, particularly on hand-built classic Aston Martins where panel consistency was never identical from car to car.
At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we undertake specialist aluminium restoration and fabrication work for Aston Martin and other prestige classic vehicles, ensuring repairs remain sympathetic to the original construction methods wherever possible.
Extensive time was invested into repairing, fabricating and aligning body sections correctly before the paint preparation stage even began.
The panel gaps, shut lines and body contours were repeatedly checked throughout the restoration process to ensure the finished car retained the elegant yet muscular proportions that make the DBS V8 so distinctive.
Concours Paintwork & Body Preparation
The paint and body preparation stage alone consumed a tremendous amount of time and craftsmanship.
At our Yorkshire classic car paint and bodywork workshop, we believe exceptional paintwork begins long before colour is ever applied. Preparation is everything.
Countless hours were spent refining the body, perfecting panel surfaces and ensuring the hand-built Aston Martin body lines remained crisp and symmetrical throughout.
The final paint finish transformed the vehicle completely, giving the DBS V8 the depth, clarity and presence such an iconic grand tourer deserves.
Even today, more than a decade after the restoration was completed, the paintwork still looks exceptional — a testament both to the quality of the restoration and to the care the vehicle has continued to receive since leaving our workshop.
Sourcing Rare Aston Martin Parts
One of the greatest challenges during this restoration involved sourcing parts.
Classic Aston Martin DBS V8 components are not always easy to obtain, particularly when trying to source correct or high-quality parts for a proper long-term restoration.
Items such as trim pieces, specialist fittings and even replacement glass became major tasks in themselves. Locating the correct glass for the vehicle proved especially difficult, requiring significant time, persistence and specialist supplier knowledge.
Fortunately, over many years in the classic car industry, Classic Car Lab Yorkshire have developed extensive contacts and supplier networks capable of locating rare and hard-to-find parts for prestige classic vehicles.
Sometimes restoring a car properly is not simply about engineering skill — it is also about patience, relationships and determination.
Aston Martin DBS V8 Engine Rebuild & Mechanical Restoration
The mechanical restoration was equally comprehensive.
The DBS V8 engine was fully stripped, rebuilt and carefully tuned to restore both performance and drivability. Aston Martin V8 engines possess enormous character and power, but rebuilding them correctly requires specialist understanding and careful setup work.
Engine restoration work included:
- Full engine strip down
- Internal engine rebuilding
- New pistons and internal components
- Cylinder head work
- Cooling system restoration
- Fuel system refurbishment
- Electrical restoration
- Mechanical recommissioning
- Specialist tuning and setup
Thanks to the expertise of our specialist tuner, the finished engine delivered exactly what the DBS V8 is famous for:
smooth torque, effortless power and refined grand touring performance.
The completed car possesses enormous presence on the road while remaining surprisingly usable and confidence inspiring to drive.
Interior Restoration & Fine Detailing
The interior restoration was another major undertaking requiring extensive time and craftsmanship.
Large sections of the cabin were restored or retrimmed to return the interior to the luxurious standard expected from a hand-built Aston Martin grand tourer.
The amount of detail involved was immense.
Every section of trim, every fitting and every interior component required careful attention to ensure the finished cabin matched the quality of the exterior and mechanical restoration work.
The finished interior perfectly complements the muscular elegance of the DBS V8 and gives the entire vehicle an authentic yet beautifully restored atmosphere.
Continuing Care & Long-Term Relationship
One of the most satisfying aspects of this restoration is that the story did not end once the car left the workshop.
More than 13 years later, this Aston Martin DBS V8 still returns to Classic Car Lab Yorkshire for ongoing servicing, maintenance and sympathetic upgrades.
Seeing the car continue to look and drive beautifully after all these years is incredibly rewarding for the entire team.
Long-term relationships like this are at the heart of what we do.
Classic car restoration is not simply about rebuilding vehicles — it is about preserving them properly for future generations while building trust with the people who own them.
This particular DBS V8 remains a real credit to both its owner and the restoration team who brought it back to life.
