Aston Martin DB5 Restoration & Mechanical Upgrades Yorkshire – Classic Car Lab

Preserving an Icon While Improving Usability

The Aston Martin DB5 is quite simply one of the most iconic British cars ever built. Immortalised through cinema, admired by collectors across the world and regarded by many as the pinnacle of 1960s grand touring design, the DB5 remains one of the most desirable Aston Martins ever produced.

This particular Aston Martin DB5 has been known to Classic Car Lab Yorkshire for many years and has undergone ongoing restoration, servicing, paintwork and mechanical improvement work during its time with us.

Rather than being a full concours rebuild, this project focused on sympathetically improving reliability, drivability, comfort and usability while preserving the character and originality that make the DB5 so special.

Projects like this are increasingly popular within the classic car world.

Owners want their cars to remain authentic, but they also want to enjoy driving them in modern traffic conditions and warmer climates without compromising the integrity or appearance of the vehicle.

At our Yorkshire classic car restoration workshop, we specialise in blending heritage craftsmanship with discreet modern engineering upgrades — perfectly fitting the Classic Car Lab philosophy of Heritage to Modern.

Mechanical Restoration & Ongoing Servicing

Over the years, extensive mechanical servicing and restoration work was undertaken on this Aston Martin DB5.

Classic Aston Martins require specialist knowledge and careful attention to detail, particularly when it comes to cooling systems, electrical reliability and drivability. Our aim throughout this project was to improve reliability while maintaining the car’s factory feel and appearance.

Mechanical restoration and servicing work included:

  • Engine servicing and tuning
  • Electrical system restoration
  • Cooling system upgrades
  • General mechanical recommissioning
  • Reliability improvements
  • Ongoing maintenance and annual servicing
  • Paint and bodywork refinishing

As with many classic grand tourers of the era, heat management can become a challenge during modern driving conditions, particularly in summer traffic.

To improve cooling performance and reliability, an upgraded aluminium radiator was carefully installed. This significantly improved cooling efficiency while remaining visually sympathetic to the car itself.

Hidden Air Conditioning System – A Discreet Modern Upgrade

One of the most unusual and rewarding aspects of this project was the integration of a discreet air conditioning system.

Modern comfort upgrades on valuable classics can often look intrusive or out of place if not designed carefully. The owner wanted improved cabin comfort during warmer weather while preserving the elegant original appearance of the Aston Martin interior.

At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we designed and fabricated a clever hidden solution that allowed the air conditioning system to remain almost completely invisible once installed.

The air conditioning vents were discreetly concealed behind a false radio speaker panel, allowing cool air to circulate throughout the cabin without compromising the original dashboard appearance.

This type of sympathetic engineering upgrade perfectly demonstrates the level of detail and creativity involved in high-end classic car restoration and modification work.

The result was a DB5 that retained its classic 1960s character while benefiting from modern comfort and improved usability — exactly how discreet upgrades should be implemented.

Classic Car Paintwork & Refinishing

Alongside the mechanical and electrical restoration work, the Aston Martin also received paint and body refinishing work during its time at our Yorkshire workshop.

At Classic Car Lab, we undertake everything from bare-metal classic car resprays and concours refinishing through to localised paint restoration, corrosion repair and specialist bodywork for classic and modern classic vehicles.

Our goal is always to preserve the integrity and elegance of the original vehicle while ensuring the finish remains sharp, clean and protected for years to come.

The DB5’s timeless body lines and hand-built aluminium panels require careful preparation and refinement, particularly when undertaking restoration paintwork on such an iconic British classic.

Aston Martin Restoration Specialists in Yorkshire

Classic Car Lab Yorkshire have extensive experience working on Aston Martin vehicles including DB4, DB5, DB6 and Lagonda restoration projects.

From mechanical recommissioning and engine rebuilding through to fabrication, electrical restoration, paintwork and discreet modern upgrades, we understand the balance required between originality, reliability and usability.

Whether undertaking a concours restoration or a sympathetic mechanical upgrade project such as this DB5, our philosophy remains the same:

  • preserve the soul of the car,
  • improve where appropriate,
  • and always respect the heritage of the vehicle.

A Yorkshire Aston Martin Restoration with Character

This Aston Martin DB5 project may not have involved a complete ground-up rebuild, but it perfectly demonstrates the variety of restoration and specialist engineering work carried out at Classic Car Lab Yorkshire.

From hidden air conditioning integration and cooling upgrades through to electrical restoration, paintwork and ongoing servicing, this DB5 became a superb example of how classic cars can be discreetly improved for modern driving without losing their identity.

The result is an Aston Martin that remains elegant, usable and enjoyable to drive — exactly as a grand touring car should be.
