Aston Martin DB2/4 Restoration

Project Information
Project Description:
Aston Martin DB2/4 Restoration Yorkshire – Classic Aston Martin Restoration by Classic Car Lab
Preserving One of Britain’s Most Elegant Hand-Built Grand Tourers
The Aston Martin DB2/4 is one of the most beautiful and historically important Aston Martins ever produced. Built during the early years of the David Brown era, the DB2/4 perfectly captured the elegance, craftsmanship and sporting character that would later define the legendary DB4, DB5 and DB6 models.
Hand-built, beautifully proportioned and increasingly rare, the Aston Martin DB2/4 represents the golden age of British coachbuilt motoring.
This particular Aston Martin DB2/4 arrived at Classic Car Lab Yorkshire requiring extensive restoration, paintwork, engine recommissioning and body restoration work to return the car to the condition it deserved.
Projects like this are exactly why we love classic car restoration.
There is something truly special about preserving a hand-built British sports car of this era, particularly one with so much elegance, craftsmanship and character throughout every detail of its construction.
Body Restoration & Classic Aston Martin Paintwork
One of the major areas of restoration involved extensive body and paintwork repairs throughout the vehicle.
Like many hand-built Aston Martins from this period, the DB2/4 required careful preparation and sympathetic restoration work to preserve the shape and integrity of the original body while addressing age-related deterioration.
At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we undertake everything from bare-metal classic car resprays and aluminium body restoration through to structural fabrication, corrosion repair and concours paintwork for classic and modern classic vehicles.
Once the necessary body repairs and preparation work had been completed, the Aston Martin underwent a full body respray in its original factory green — a colour perfectly suited to the timeless lines and understated elegance of the DB2/4.
The paint preparation stage consumed countless hours of refinement and detailing to ensure the final finish complemented the hand-built nature of the vehicle.
The completed paintwork gave the Aston Martin exceptional depth, richness and authenticity while preserving the period-correct appearance the car originally left the factory with.
Preserving the Original Interior & Patina
One of the most important decisions during this restoration involved the interior.
Rather than completely replacing the cabin and losing the atmosphere of the car, the decision was made to sympathetically recondition and preserve as much originality as possible.
At Classic Car Lab Yorkshire, we understand that originality and patina form a huge part of the charm and value of historic vehicles such as the Aston Martin DB2/4.
The leather interior was therefore carefully revived and nourished while preserving the beautiful aged character, smell and tactile feel that only genuine historic interiors can provide.
This sympathetic approach allowed the Aston Martin to retain its authentic 1950s atmosphere while still presenting beautifully throughout.
Sometimes preserving history is more important than replacing it.
Engine Recommissioning & Mechanical Restoration
Mechanically, the Aston Martin required substantial recommissioning work throughout the engine and associated systems.
Classic Aston Martins of this era require careful specialist attention, particularly when restoring drivability and reliability after years of ageing and inactivity.
Mechanical restoration work included:
- Engine recommissioning
- Cylinder head skimming
- New spark plugs and ignition servicing
- Electronic starter motor upgrade
- Mechanical tuning and setup
- General servicing and reliability improvements
One particularly beneficial upgrade involved fitting a modern electronic starter motor to improve reliability and ease of starting while remaining sympathetic to the character of the vehicle.
This subtle improvement allows the car to be enjoyed more confidently during regular use without compromising its originality or driving experience.
Once completed, the DB2/4 delivered exactly what an Aston Martin grand tourer should:
smooth performance, refined power delivery and effortless character on the road.
A Beautiful Example of Yorkshire Classic Car Restoration
The finished Aston Martin DB2/4 became a truly beautiful example of classic British motoring restored sympathetically and respectfully.
Projects like this perfectly demonstrate the philosophy behind Classic Car Lab Yorkshire:
- preserve originality wherever possible,
- improve reliability sympathetically,
- and combine traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering knowledge.
From body restoration and concours paintwork through to engine recommissioning and interior preservation, this Aston Martin received the level of care and attention such an important British classic deserves.
The end result was not simply a restored car, but a preserved piece of motoring history ready to continue being enjoyed for many years to come.
